BLACK COUNTRY, NEW ROAD OPUS

Recognisable as a highlight from their live shows (remember those?), 'Opus' is the gargantuan closing track from revered seven-piece Black Country, New Road's debut album For the first time. Tailor made for mosh-pits, 'Opus' veers uncontrollably from foreboding Slint-esque interludes to an overwhelming cacophony of Gypsy-punk and unrelenting prog-rock, characterised by dramatic strings, rampant saxophones and an all-consuming rhythm section. Enhanced further by the well-honed production skills of Andrew Savours (Sorry, The Horrors, My Bloody Valentine et al), 'Opus' pushes the boundaries of how thrilling studio recordings can sound. Whilst we're still missing the powerful sonic vibrations of the real thing, 'Opus' scratches an itch that we didn't know we needed to scratch and provides a full on cathartic release. For the first time is out now via Ninja Tune.  -Holly Mullineaux
